2024 Design Awards

The City of Winchester Trust was delighted to welcome members and guests to its 2024 Design Awards ceremony, held on 25th February at the University of Winchester’s West Downs Centre.

The Trust holds its Design Awards every few years. Awards are made for schemes which display a high standard of design, make a lasting contribution to the City of Winchester and demonstrate a positive understanding of the character of the surroundings. Awards are only given to schemes that fulfil these criteria – if none of the entries in a given year achieve them, no awards are granted. In 2015, for example, only one entry was given an award.

This time four awards and one commendation were made from a shortlist of nine.

The award winners were the Handlebar Café, designed by ArchitecturePLB for SPUD (Space, Place and Urban Design); Lovedon Fields, designed by John Pardey Architects for HAB Housing; The Valley, Stanmore, designed by Snug Architects for Winchester City Council; and the West Downs Centre, designed by Design Engine for the University of Winchester. The commendation went to 108 Colebrook Street, designed by Rockcliffe Williams Architects for St John’s Winchester.

The awards were presented by Winchester’s Mayor, Cllr Russell Gordon-Smith, and the chair of the judging panel, Sasha Bhavan, of London-based KnoxBhavan Architects. Winners received a certificate and a mosaic plaque, specially commissioned for the Awards from Carolin Esser-Miles.

“Our brief was to look for and reward excellence in design, delivery and construction, and to seek real benefit to the community and the wider built environment debates of sustainability, housing and community,” said Sasha. “The projects needed to be more than just good. They needed to offer answers or be examples of what excellence in design and delivery looks like. They needed to be aspirational examples of what can be achieved.”

The Trust would like to congratulate the winners, and also to thank all those who submitted entries.
