Bushfield Down - TrustNews Dec 2005

As you will know the area of the former Army camp on the downland on the west side of the Itchen Valley opposite St. Cross has for some time been a target for development. The east side of the Itchen valley, which falls within the boundary of the proposed South Downs National Park, will be afforded protection from development. However, as matters now stand, the western side has no such protection, in spite of the area forming a vital part of the peerless setting of our City.

Prompted by the known desire of Winchester City Council to develop some form of sports facility in the area, the Trust has decided to investigate what need the City has and whether it can be accommodated elsewhere.

The results of this consultation will be known at the end of November and will influence subsequent action. The Trust's Council is planning a spring tour of Bushfield Down, possibly led by a national figure, to show the membership and the citizens of Winchester, what a wonderful treasure we have in this area of downland, and what development on it would mean in terms of the City's setting. The Trust is also considering a comprehensive leafleting campaign in which we will need the help of our membership. When the need arises we will be seeking volunteers to put the leaflets through letter boxes. Sadly the facilities provided by The Post Office are unaffordable.

We will let you know how this project develops.
